week 14 homework; 3 reasons not to keep dolphins in a tank

Dolphins are has complex emotional cognition like human being. That qualifies animals are not just animals. We human being put a lot of value on emotions, which is considered to be how we are distinct as human being by majority. This article gives chance to us to think about the relationship between us and animals.

week 14 homework; evening's discussion

mum was right--Definitely right. I feel better after a cuddle with someone very familiar.

One of my friend argues "No love, no gain". Right, we actually gain from love.

burning the magic bubble--when I was a kid, I was interested in magic. But the thing is that I couldn't do as well as those professionals. They are so skilled that they actually can control our cognition.

Babies may be more language-savvy-- Interesting article. It could be related to genetic information which clearly describes people are by nature different, not differ by education or family environment alone.

week 12 homework; check the following link

http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/index.html

We are made of about 75 trillion cells.

They are so tiny but each of them are so distinct and they are like super little brothers.

Each of them respond to stimulation, stress, emotion, damage differently. It's just like we respond to certain events differently in real life.

week 12 homework; post thoughts on evening discussion

I felt banana equivalent dose is quite interesting idea.

It shows that our life is pretty much the life with radiation.

The only matter is that how big it is...

week 13 homework; post thoughts on this week's discusssion

This week we talked about the relationship between us and our planet.

Quite a few of us think that we are consuming our planet too much with so fast pace.

Population is growing, so eventually we consume more.

But it is not realistic that all of our nation regulates "One Child Policy".

So our individual effort and the growth of green technology is necessary.

If each of us work a bit harder and technology is improved, we are likely to have solution to the relationship.

Week 13 homework; "the human species is living as if it had more than one planet to occupy"

I think that's partially true.

About 30 years ago, an Economist argues that 30 years later there would be no more resource for us because we are consuming so rapidly and population grows very fast.

Now, 30 years later, some people are still arguing that 30 years later there would be no more resource...

We are rapidly consuming our planet but at the same time technology is rapidly growing.

So it is hard to say there would be no more resource in the future.

Neutral (Ping)
Sweet (Gan)

How to make high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
3 kinds of enzyme reaction
1)      Starch is made of a lot of glucose. Add Alfa amylase (liquefying amylase, type of digestive enzyme can be obtained from microorganism ) and water into starch and at 95 C. degree, Starch will be decomposed.
(Starch molecule is too big, so at step 1 we want to make it into smaller particle by liquefaction, the process to convert something to liquid)
2)      After liquefaction , cool until 55 degree C,  add glucoamylaze which will separate each individual glucose apart from starch, now we have much smaller particle, glucose.
3)      At 60 degree C, add gluco-isomerase (type of enzyme, made from bacteria) which will convert glucose to fructose, fructose is better in quality of sweetness, which is more commercially preferred
Note that starch itself is not sweet because starch is long chain of bunch of glucose.  Our tongue  can feel sweetness if it is individual glucose, but in the form of glucose chain, we can’t.
Then after some sort of processing, corn syrup will made
Corn syrup is as sweet as or slightly sweeter than can sugar, depending on how they process after the third step
The lower the temperature, the sweeter corn syrup is. Soda is sweeter when it’s stored in refrigerator
It’s cheaper than cane sugar, about 70% price of cane sugar, so nowadays in order to reduce production cost almost every soda product use corn syrup (Coke, Pepsi)

How to make biomassethanol
Theoretically we can make bioethanol from anything with high carbohydrate
(sugar cane, corn, rice, etc)
The way to create bioethanol is basically same as they way to make alcohol
Dry grind method – newly developed factory in US
Starch ingredientàdry grindàsaccharificationàbiotic fermentation(organic decomposition by microorganism to produce certain kind of material)  10% ethanol àdistill, 95% ethanol àdyhedrate, 99.5% ethanol àethanol

Bio ethanol is a fuel
Same type of alcohol Found in alcohol beverage
Motor fuel
Additive for gasoline

Occupy 10% of car gasoline (cars nowadays can run on blends up to 10 %)

Week 9 homework: Post thoughts on evening's discussion

This week we did pH concept.

Last week we just did pH concept in physiology class.

pH is mainly regulated by cardiovascular system.

So this week's chemistry lecture was very good review for me.

week 9 homework: post thoughts on the diet suggestion in pH Balance

Homeostasis in our body tries to maintain certain pH level.

cardiovascular system is one of primary method to do that.

When inhale, oxygen comes in.

When exhale CO2 comes out

CO2 makes pH go down, leading body fluid more acidic.

Our body hates acidic.

So trying to eat less acidic food can help our health.

week 8 homework: review issue raised in Mediterranean diet better than low-fat diet for cardiovascular risk

Mediterranean method focus on balance of diet.

By focusing the balance, it will help enforce the metabolism of body and eventually reduce weight.

this method is not only applicable to diet, but also applicable to our life.

Life should be balanced.

Not too much stress, not too much drinking, not too much smoking, not too much relax, etc.

Anything regardless good or bad turns to be bad if it is excess.

Week 8 Homework: Investigate the chemical under your kitchen sink

Salt

sodium chlorine

NaCl

Used to season food

Used in the past as method of food

Salt has function to maintain osmotic pressure in body, so it is very important for us

Week 7 Homework Alchemy--science, magic, art--or all three?

Originally, Alchemy is the scientific way to research all natural phenomena happen in surroundings.

Alchemy was the origin of today's science.

Alchemy and Science meant same thing in the past.

But later they became apart.

Alchemist began to try to create gold from something non-gold material.

Science became more academic, and eventually Alchemy became Pseudoscience.

Week 7 Homework Semiconductor of the week

Si

Silicon

discovered by Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier by 1978

One of basic component of our planet

Si can be used to make glass and lens

But the most importantly, it can be used as Semiconductor from silicon chloride and trichlorosilane

It is also used to produce Liquid Crystal Display, Solar cell, thin film transistor, etc.

Week 6 Homework: post your thoughts on molecular medicine

I think it's wonderful.

Especially the article showing one can use spray and inhale protein molecule into Lung.

By doing so the protein molecule can be get through the body via Lungs.

It helps people who has digestive problem or having trouble eating to get nutrition from Lungs, by using molecular medicine.

Week 6 Homework: test understanding of hypothesis--Avogadro's Hypothesis

If there is any material of 1 mol, it has 6*10^23 particles

1 mol of oxygen has 6*10^23 particles.

1 mol of carbon has 6*10^23 particles.

mol mass can be expressed as g/mol

1 mol of water is 18 gram --> 18g/mol
1 mol of carbon has mass of 12 gram --> 12g/mol

Week 6 Homework: Alkali Earth metal of the week

Magnesium

Born in England

Can be used as food additive(with calcium it can help developing bone)

When Magnesium is burning, NEVER use water to try to banish the fire

Magnesium is highly reactive with oxygen

So when you add water to Magnesium, it rapidly and strongly steels oxygen from water, causing it burning stronger

Week 2 Homework: Post review on one of the links in assignment 2 below

http://www.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/quick_tour.html

Very interesting...

I agree with that using molecular modeling can help developing new material and new medicine.

Also it is very interesting that they use concept of multivariable calculus in molecular modeling.

Week 2 Homework: Post your thoughts on evening's discussion

Atomic Orbital: I didn't know different atom has different shape of orbital. That's quite amazing.

Critics say Chemical spill highlights Lax West Virginia Regulation: It is quite amazing that the site of spill in West Virginia Elk River has not been subject to a state or federal inspection since 1991.

Week 2 Homework: Choose your element of the week and brief discussion

Oxygen

We need it, but it's very poisonous

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica,  100% of dead people died within 150 years by inhaling oxygen.

All human being eventually die if we keep breathing...

Week 1 Homework Post your results from the Quiz on http://chemistry.boisestate.edu/rbanks/inorganic/chemistry/chemistry.htm

Week 5 Homework: Post thoughts on this evening's discussion

I like skim milk.

I drink it as substitute for liquid milk because it's cheaper, durable and it does not take that much space to store.

I didn't know skim milk are considered to be waste in the past.

Farmers in US played around with skim milk, and the story was quite interesting.

Particularly I liked the story milk dealers tried to do marketing for skim milk for acquiring new consumers.

"She can be yours"

Hmm....that sounds pretty good!

Week 5 Homework: Explore colors of foods in kitchen

Chilies: belongs to red food, important for man's health, great source of protein/vitamin/mineral.

Orange: belongs to orange food, assist in detoxifying and releasing toxins from the body.

Banana: belongs to yellow food, rich in immune system stimulation properties and vitamins and minerals.

Green pepper: belongs to green food, contain almost all of the vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes necessary for the human diet, plus chlorophyll.

Blueberry: belongs to blue food, high in anti-cancer properties, contain water soluble vitamins.

Week 5 Homework: Inert Gas of the week

helium

He

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC2ssQ7CLNY

Helium gas can be used to make balloon float on the air.

Helium gas can make your voice pitch higher.

Helium gas can make balloon to float because helium is lighter than oxygen and nitrogen in atomic weight. That's why balloon contains helium gas can float on the air.

If helium gas enters in your lungs, the voice coming out from throat can be transmitted faster than when is normal air. Then number of times the voice sympathize while passing throat increases, causing wavelength shorter.

That's why when the voice comes outside world, its pitch is higher.

Week 4 homework: Just how close are we to a Green Economy?

Green Economy/Green Chemistry is good.

It's dreamy.

It tries to make chemical production harmless and energy efficient.

It makes the relationship between us and the Planet better.

But we just began the story.

Nowadays, many big companies, regardless chemical related industry or not, are investing on Green Chemistry.

Some of their investments are doing great!

But not all nations can deal with Green Chemistry, in reality.

Many countries are still developing--their current goal is not how to make chemical production safer, but how to grow and thrive!

For example, India is trying to start Green Chemistry, but before that a lot of problems are waiting to be solved.

In this kind of case, developed country can help them out.

There must be many investment opportunity with them.

It's a long term story, but eventually, we'll make it!

Let's give it a shot!

Week 4 Homework: Catalyst of the Week

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cts3MrHnYIU

"Mentos Coke"

Putting Mentos into Coke will stimulate "blasting power" of carbon dioxide of carbonated water.

The mechanism is following:

1)   the gelatin and gum arabic from Mentos break the surface tension

2)  Each Mentos has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface.  These are perfect for carbon dioxide bubbles to form

3)  As soon as the Mentos hit the soda, bubbles form all over the surface of the candy.

4) Since surface tension is weaken by step 1), carbon dioxide bubbles created on the surface of Mentos is now easy to blast out

5) Since cap of Coke bottle is small, it enhance the blasting power of CO2 gas.

6) Blasting like Youtube movie on the top of this article occurs.

Week 3 homework: Advancing Green Chemistry

http://advancinggreenchemistry.org/

Green Chemists are trying to make the relationship between Chemicals and our Planet better than before!

Week 3 homework: review of "Neptune Medicine Chest"

William Fenical is a scientist.

He is founder of newly established company "Nereus Pharmaceutical Inc."

He mainly studied for bacteria in ocean.

One of his research achievement is patented and sold to cosmetic company Estee and bring $680000 to UC system, which is top 10 of all UC patent.

He wants to continue to study for ocean bacteria so that he can find the bacteria that can cure/resist cancer, eventually patented and produced by pharmaceutical industries.

I think it is definitely dreamy story.

His Nereus Pharmaceutical is currently being secured by stock holder.

It costs a lot of money, so things are not that easy to go along, but I hope his story will eventually become real and help human being health!

Week 3 Assignment-- Transitional Metal of the week

Au

atomic number= 79

Widely known as "gold"

It is symbol of wealth, ultimate beauty and desire and corruption.

For its characteristics, pseudo-specialist and salesman on TV tell us how super nonsense how wonderful and mysterious it is.

It is soft and heavy.

It is very hard to go rusty because it has the lowest ionization tendency.
